A Nordic spa is a circuit of hot and cold. Here's how we suggest doing it: 10–15 minutes in the sauna, a 30–90 second dip in the cold plunge, then a rest in the hot pool or on the decks or hammocks. That's one round. Most guests do two or three rounds over a 90-minute session. The pattern is ancient; the effect is modern — most first-timers leave calmer, lighter, and sleeping better that night.

Waterstruck is a community Nordic spa in Newcastle, Maine, on the Damariscotta River. We opened in November 2024 and we're the only Nordic-style spa in Midcoast Maine — a wood-fired Finnish sauna (160–180°F), a warm hydrotherapy pool (100°F), a 50°F cold plunge, plus bodywork, massage and a studio for yoga and meditation.

No. The cold plunge is optional, and plenty of our regulars skip it entirely! You can have a full, restorative Nordic spa experience with just the sauna and hot pool — the cold is there if and when you want it. If you've never tried it, start with 30 seconds. It's more approachable than it looks.

Come alone — a good number in our community does! Public community sessions are designed so you can show up solo and feel comfortable, whether you stay to yourself or strike up a conversation in the hot pool. We also host silent sessions, which tend to be the easiest entry point if a quieter, less social visit sounds better to you.
-
Yes — private sessions for up to 18 people are bookable on our website here. They're popular for milestone birthdays, wedding “day after brunch”, family reunions and bachelorette/bachelorette weekends. Private is also the only way to include minors; public community sessions are 18+.
Private sessions can include bodywork, yoga, sound baths, catering and more and are available year-round.

Yes to all four. Massage and bodywork are available in a private treatment room and can be added to a Nordic circuit session or booked on their own — we're the only place in the midcoast offering full bodywork with access to a sauna and cold plunge the same visit. Yoga and guided meditation run on a regular schedule in the studio; check the calendar for times.

A lot of our out-of-town guests build a weekend around a Nordic session here, a drive to Pemaquid Point, oysters at Glidden Point, and a morning walk along the river at Dodge Point. Waterstruck is also a top rainy-day option in Midcoast Maine - sauna in the rain is lovely, and our rest areas are outdoors as well as indoors. For lodging, the Newcastle Inn — five minutes up the road — is a lovely place to spend the night!
